• About Dr. Amber Learn

    Dr. Amber Learn is a Clinical Psychologist, a mental health professional with a doctoral degree who diagnosis and treats mental health conditions. Clinical Psychologists do not prescribe medication to treat mental health conditions, instead, they use psychological techniques to promote healing and change. Psychologists work in coordination with Psychiatrists (medical doctors who specialize in mental health issues and can prescribe medication) and Primary Care Providers to give you the most comprehensive team approach to treatment.

    Dr. Learn earned a Bachelors Degree from the University of California, Davis and her Masters and Doctoral degrees in Clinical Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology (CSPP) at Alliant International University, San Diego. She graduated with Honors and was awarded the Outstanding Achievement in Clinical Practice and Research award for her graduating class.

    Professional Experience

    Dr. Learn has worked in several professional settings including private practice, adolescent treatment centers, inpatient hospital units, K-12 schools, community clinics, and court settings. This broad experience allows her to help patients navigate their own interactions with the broader community and various treatment needs.

    Dr. Learn served as a Behavioral Coach with New Haven Youth and Family Services working with adolescents and their caretakers in residential treatment centers and private homes to help manage high-risk childhood behaviors. At Springall Academy, a public school for special needs children, Dr. Learn provided individual psychotherapy, group psychotherapy, and crisis intervention to children and adolescents with mood disorders, learning disabilities, trauma, and subsequent behavior problems. She worked at Harmonium, Inc., a non-profit community clinic, where she provided short and long-term psychotherapy to adults, adolescents, and families to overcome struggles and minimize problem behaviors. At Harmonium, she led parenting groups focusing on issues that parents struggle with while raising teenagers. She also led anger management, anti-theft, and substance abuse groups for teens.

    Dr. Learn worked at the Yolo County District Attorney’s Office, serving as an advocate for victims and witnesses of violent crime. She assisted victims and their families in navigating the court system and provided one-on-one support through criminal cases.

    Dr. Learn worked at the UCSD Medical Center providing short-term therapy and acute stabilization to individuals and groups on the inpatient psychiatric unit at the Hillcrest Campus. In the UCSD Clinical Trials department, she conducted pharmaceutical research with patients diagnosed with ADHD, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Schizophrenia, and Bipolar I & II Disorder.

    Dr. Learn completed her post-doctoral training at California State University, San Marcos. She worked with a diverse student population to overcome issues affecting their academic success. Prevalent issues included depression, anxiety, ADHD, destructive anger, relationship conflict, attachment disorders, disordered eating, bipolar disorder, impulse control disorders, and other academic struggles. She led several presentations educating students on leadership issues, communication styles, and stress management. She also led clinical training on various Body Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRBs) including trichotillomania and dermatillomania.

    Specialty Training

    Dr. Learn has been trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy by the EMDR Professional Training organization. The EMDR Professional Training organization is an approved training provider through the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA). She is a professional member of the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA) and stays up-to-date on training and research in the field of trauma therapy. EMDR is a trauma-informed therapeutic approach used to treat single-event traumas, early childhood trauma, complex adult trauma and phobias. EMDR is a highly effective treatment approach that helps resolve the present day problems of underlying trauma.

    Dr. Learn is a professional member of The TLC Foundation for Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRB) and graduate of the Foundation’s training academy. Dr. Learn stays up-to-date on the latest evidence-based research and treatment methods to help patients effectively treat hair pulling, skin picking, and related BFRB behaviors. Dr. Learn was part of the presentation team at the 2019 TLC Foundation’s national conference in Virginia where she led a workshop on the link between self-soothing and the brain. The TLC Foundation provides comprehensive research, advocacy, education and treatment resources to people affected by Body Focused Repetitive Behaviors (chronic skin picking, chronic hair pulling, and chronic nail biting).
